U-Haul: Rolling Out Innovation with American-Made Dollies In the bustling city of Tempe, Arizona, a remarkable transformation takes place. Here, at the U-Haul Technical Center, raw materials begin their journey, undergoing rigorous testing and meticulous research. This is the birthplace of U-Haul’s utility dollies, a product that epitomizes the company’s commitment to quality and American manufacturing. The process is a testament to U-Haul’s dedication to the “Made in America” ethos. It starts with a thorough examination of materials to ensure they meet high standards. Once approved, the design and experimentation phase kicks in, where engineers and technicians brainstorm, prototype, and refine their ideas. What follows is a symphony of manufacturing prowess at the Glendale Manufacturing Plant in Glendale, AZ. Pieces of metal are artfully crafted into the iconic orange dollies that have become synonymous with do-it-yourself moving. With state-of-the-art robotics and a top-notch crew that works around the clock, this plant embodies efficiency. These dollies aren’t just a means to an end; they’re a statement of durability and reliability, capable of holding up to 500 pounds. But the innovation doesn’t stop at the assembly line. Before these dollies reach the hands of customers, they undergo a series of tests designed to simulate various weather conditions and driving scenarios. This ensures that each dolly is not only user-friendly but also equipped to handle the rigors of moving. U-Haul’s in-house engineering and manufacturing allows for a level of control and flexibility that is rare in today’s globalized market. By overseeing the production schedule, U-Haul can swiftly bring their products from concept to market in just weeks, which enables them to accommodate the growing demands of their customers. This streamlined process benefits not only the company but also the customers. With over 70 years of experience in serving do-it-yourself movers, U-Haul has honed the art of creating products that are safe, durable, and perfectly suited to the needs of those they serve. U-Haul’s dolly manufacturing is more than just an industrial process; it’s a reflection of the company’s values and a beacon of American manufacturing prowess. As these dollies roll out across the country, they carry with them the legacy of a brand that has been moving America forward, one orange masterpiece at a time.

    • Jasmine Spencer, U-Haul's SRI Program Manager, at the Glendale Mfg. Plant is proud of these dollies.
